Included Actvities - Green Island & Great Barrier Reef
With your Green Island and Great Barrier Reef Adventure, you will have the opportunity to experience the Great Barrier Reef in two different ways – from an island and from the outer reef platform – all in one day!
On Green Island
While on Green Island, you’ll have two hours to explore this remarkable island.
Snorkel
You can collect your snorkel gear – mask, snorkel and fins from the island Dive Shop.
Swim and snorkel directly from Green Island’s soft white coral sand beaches. Turtles can often be seen as the island has a significant sea grass habitat. The main beach area is patrolled by Surf Lifesaving Queensland lifeguards.
Self-guided Eco Island Walk and Interpretive Centre
Download Self Guided Eco Walk
Ideal for nature lovers! Collect Great Adventures’ Self-guided Eco Island Walk booklet from the Island Information Counter and take a leisurely walk through the rainforest. You’ll learn about some of the island’s flora and fauna – over 120 native plant species and around 55 species of birds are regularly seen on the island.
The colourful interpretive (multi-lingual) boardwalk centre is set in the tranquil rainforest (north of Marineland Melanesia) and features unique displays on the
island’s ecology, and European and Indigenous histories.
Walking around the island takes about 45 minutes and you’ll see different environments, from the sandy beaches to granite beach rock.
Great Barrier Reef Platform
Whether you choose to get wet and meet “Wally” our resident Maori Wrasse, or stay dry and explore from the comfort of the semi-submersible, you can experience the reef in so many ways and at your own pace.
Get wet and meet the locals…
Snorkelling
Snorkel directly from the semi-submerged snorkel platforms into beautiful coral gardens. It’s easy, fun and one of the best ways to experience the amazing underwater world of the Great Barrier Reef. Be sure to watch the snorkelling demonstration or just ask one of our friendly crew for some tips to get the most out of your experience. Snorkel in confidence as the lifeguard safety officers are on hand to supervise.
Your snorkelling equipment – mask, snorkel, fins and buoyancy vests are all available on the platform.
If you would like to learn more about the Great Barrier Reef, you can join a guided snorkel tour as an optional activity.
Or stay dry and discover…
Semi-submersible coral viewing tour
Explore the vibrant reef from the comfort of the air-conditioned semi-submersible coral viewing tour with informative commentary. Our friendly crew are ready to share their knowledge and passion for the Great Barrier Reef with you.
As the semi-sub meanders slowly through beautiful coral gardens, you’ll experience the remarkable life below the surface.
The semi-sub tour takes approximately 25 minutes and departs every 30 minutes, or as announced, from the rear of the platform.
Underwater Observatory
From the underwater observatory you will be able to view corals, giant clams and be mesmerised by a myriad of colourful fish and marine life before your eyes. Here you can explore at your own pace or join the Eco Reef talk with the Marine Naturalist. Be sure to check out the extensive interpretive posters in the underwater observatory too. You’ll be identifying Nemos and parrotfish in no time!
From the viewing area, you can also watch divers as they descend into the water for an underwater adventure from the specially designed dive platform.
